Oriental, Floral, Oud
Described by the brand as "a butterfly with golden wings", L'Arc Parfum's Chrysalide is the olfactory equivalent of a chrysalis, the intermediate 'cocoon' stage that a caterpillar goes through before it becomes a butterfly. This pupal stage is never thought of as the end of a caterpillar's life cycle, it's considered the starting point of it's final conquest: it's metamorphosis.
Scent wise, Chrysalide is a very modern and lavish blend of Laotian oud, rose and a rather surly vetiver that seems to constantly duck and dive in and out of view. Frankincense, bergamot and grapefruit provide the initial, fresh intrigue up top. Jasmine, rose, nutmeg and the aforementioned oud provide the strength and define the direction in the heart before the smoothness of the woody dry down (a combination of cedar, gaiacwood, patchouli, amber and musk crowned by tobacco leaves).
It's the journey of the vetiver that really transfixes throughout the wear though. Starting crisp and green it morphs into the brighter, linalool tinged rosy elements in the heart and ends up deep and earthen in the final stage. It's as if the vetiver was the caterpillar itself, shedding it's green and easy, grassy naivety before latching onto the the floralcy of the heart accord to create a uniquely earthen, spectacular rose.
